December Movie Drop

We’re Headed into the ‘20s

It’s the end of the decade and we’re heading into the 20’s all over again. The 1920’s is known for the explosion of art, intellectualism and economic growth in the Black American community. The Harlem Renaissance, also known as the “New Negro Movement”, gave birth to some of the most culture shifting narratives in our history on this land. As we enter the New 20’s with the accessibility that we all have to art as both creators and consumers, I feel a resurgence of our stories from all areas of the diaspora being told by us boldly in the upcoming years.

This month, I have added some movies and shorts that are on YouTube (free and rented) and other free streaming services. Because we are more than just the stories that are allowed to make it through the gates of the powers that be.

This month’s movie is Atlantics a love story that traverses the worldly constraints that we all know. It tells a story of economic disparities in a community and its grave impact. It is a ghost story that weaves in an incredibly pure love.

Starring: Mama Sane (Ada), Ibrahima Traore (Souleiman), Aminata Kane (Fanta)

Written and Directed by: Mati Diop
